Paestum is a truly enchanting and atmospheric place, and a must see on any classical tour of Italy.
Just south of the Sorrento peninsula and Amalfi Coast, and a mile inland, this is an exciting archaeological site where three Greek temples stand in the middle of the countryside.
Paestum was one of the most important ancient sites in Magna Grecia (Greater Greece) where the Greeks first conquered Italy.
The temples are some of the largest in Italy and those who have previously seen Pompeii will notice a significant difference between the two ancient sites.
HERCULANEUM
A trip not to be missed: Herculaneum. Immeasurable treasure trove of art and history, the excavations of Herculaneum give us an ancient and beautiful city founded by the Greeks on the shores of the sea, then falling under the rule of the Sanniti, and finally, in the Roman town of Herculaneum.
The archaeological park is ideal stop for those who have limited time but want to experience the thrill of walking in the footsteps of the ancient Romans!
Although smaller than nearby Pompeii, Herculaneum is far better preserved. The devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD covered Pompeii in a thick layer of volcanic ash but left Herculaneum submerged by a 20 m (65 ft) mudslide, which hardened and perfectly preserved the houses, shops, villas, and frescoes beneath.
